Description
Cleft palate is one of those areas where SLPs need to understand the surgery as well as the speech. You need to know what the surgeon did, what it was supposed to fix, and what your role is when the speech outcome isn’t what everyone hoped for.
Five modules cover VP anatomy, cleft classification, resonance disorders, perceptual and instrumental assessment, and treatment — including the critical distinction between when therapy is appropriate and when only surgery will help.

- Identify the muscles and neural controls that drive VP closure
- Classify cleft types and explain how they form embryonically
- Distinguish VPI from VP incompetence from VP mislearning
- Conduct perceptual resonance evaluation with appropriate speech tasks
- Interpret nasometry, videofluoroscopy, and nasopharyngoscopy results
- Determine whether a patient needs surgery or speech therapy
